Coffee is not completely devoid of risks. There is certainly a downside to coffee consumption:
- Caffeine, coffee’s main ingredient, is a mildly addictive stimulant with cardiovascular effects such as increased heart rate, increased blood pressure and occasional irregular heartbeat.
- Coffee has also been reported to aggravate previously existing gastrointestinal ulcers.
- In some people, caffeine causes nervousness, rapid heartbeat, palpitations, sleeplessness and irritability. It can even lead to health problems such as osteoporosis or high blood pressure.
- Drinking coffee increases the need to urinate.
Note: Moderate intakes of coffee or caffeine do not appear to have harmful effects.
